Club Notes 13th March 2022

SENIOR MATTERS

Our Senior Men kick off their County League campaign belatedly with the Round 1 game against Kerins O Rahillys now being played on Friday March 25th in Direen with a 7.30pm throw in.
Our Senior Ladies are away to Listowel this Sunday March 20th in their opening round game in the Donal Curtin Cup with a 12 noon  throw in. We wish the Ladies the very best of luck.

U17 BOYS

Our Minor Boys, deprived of the services of several regulars, made the trip down south to play St Michaels Foilmore last Sunday March 13th. The South Kerry side are fancied to top the Division so the task was always going to be onerous even with a full squad. St Michaels made the most of a strong breeze in the first half to open up a healthy lead but credit to the lads  they played to the last whistle. When the final shrill was heard Foilmore had emerged victorious on a 2-22 to 3-4 scoreline. The boys are at home this Saturday March 19th when they face the Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane combination. All support is welcome.

U14 LADIES

The girls had the honour of being the first Legion juvenile team to play a competitive game in Direen this year. And they held up their side of the bargain with a fine 2-14 to 3-4 win over a Dingle/ Annascaul/ Castlegregory amalgamation. The panel included Liadan Coleman, Lucie Smith, Grace O’Shea, Laura Healy, Róisín McAuliffe, Kiera Moynihan, Grace Cox, Kaylee Smith, Eva O’Shea, Zoe Counihan, Kate O’Toole, Emily O’Neill, Sophie Duke, Kate Fleming, Clodagh Flanagan, Eva Spellman, Ali Bowler, Kate Forde and Lauren McSweeney.
Well done to team and management.

AWARDS NIGHT

Our Awards Night is looming on the horizon as it takes place on Friday March 25th in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Last week we announced the Ladies Players of the Year, both Junior and Senior, and the Senior B Player of the Year. Now we move onto the Senior Men’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

Tickets for the Awards Night are available from Sharon O Grady, Orla Culloty and members of the Social Committee. They are also available from Paul in Keanes Jewellers and Enda in Quills Menswear.

SENIOR MEN PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This year’s Senior Men’s Player of the Year is Danny Sheahan. 2021 wasn’t a great year for our Senior Team but very often it’s during the roughest storm that you find your strongest anchor. Danny was ever present in the defence and throughout the year he put in a series of combative performances. Brian Kelly in goal can attest to the protection Danny gives while the other five defenders are always kept on their toes by the strong and authoritative full back. Often tasked with marking the oppositions best forward Danny went toe to toe with three All Stars ,namely Tommy Walsh, Paul Geaney and Kieran Donaghy, and never wilted on any of those battles. As the Senior team look to bounce back to the top table there is no doubting that Danny will once again be to the fore.

JIM TRANT TROPHY-YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The winner of the Jim Trant Trophy for Young Player of the Year made huge strides in 2021. It started with the Covid delayed  2020 All Ireland Minor Championship where Will Shine was an integral part of the Kerry forward line that agonisingly lost out in the final by the bare minimum to Derry. Will then went on to establish himself in the Club Senior panel where his performances belied his teenage years and in the latter stages of the year he was called up to the Kerry Under 20 panel. As if that wasn’t enough he is one of the big driving forces behind St Brendans path to the Hogan Cup Final  which will be played this St Patrick’s Day. A man of the match performance in the Corn Ui Mhuiri Final win over Tralee CBS , Will is looked upon as being a real prospect in the future.

KERRY

Ryan O Grady and Cian Gammell were both part of the victorious Kerry panels over the past week. Ryan came on as a second half substitute in the U20s win over Dublin in the John Kerins Cup Final played in Nenagh. Cian was a member of the Kerry panel that saw off the challenge of Mayo in the latest blockbuster between the two counties, this time in the Allianz National Football League. Keep up the good work lads!!

MEMBERS MEETING

On Thursday March 10th the Club hosted a very constructive and informative Members meeting which was well attended. David Randles chaired an open discussion on all club matters and it is intended to run these meetings in a by monthly manner. It is important that all members endeavour to attend these meetings when possible as they provide a very important platform for Club affairs to be aired.

SAFEGUARDING COURSE

We will be holding 2 safeguarding courses in the Legion Clubhouse on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd March from 7 -10pm for  coaches and volunteers working with juveniles (boys and girls up to 18 years). This course is very important to undertake and  all those working at underage level in the club are expected to attend.Contact Club Children’s officer Linda O’Donoghue at Childrensofficer.legion.kerry@gaa.ie with your name and email address to register for the course.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES

The Club extends its sympathies to the family of Bill Leavey, Gneeveguilla, who passed away during the week. Bill’s son William is a friendly and willing face around Direen as he goes about his tasks every week without fuss.
