SATURDAY MORNING ACADEMY

The excitement that is Our Saturday Morning Academy, sponsored by Keanes Jewellers, returns this coming Saturday March 5th . With our experienced and fully qualified Coaches it provides an ideal opportunity to learn how to play football in a fun filled environment. New recruits are always welcome and registration is available at both www.legiongaa.com and on the morning of the Academy. If you need any further information you can contact head Coach Liam O’Toole at 087 6373461. The Academy of course caters for Girls and Boys aged from 5 to 11.

ST BRENDANS COLLEGE

Hats off to St Brendan’s College who held their nerve right to the very end to eventually overcome the stubborn challenge of St Mary’s of Magherafelt in a tense Hogan Cup semi final played in the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan Co.Mayo. Will Shine was the Sems chief score getter in the first half kicking some nice points while Darragh Fleming had a fine hour. On a blustery day not ideal for goalkeepers Aaron O Sullivans kickouts were excellent. Sam Benson was also part of the panel. They now look forward to the Blue Riband day, the Hogan Cup Final, which takes place in Croke Park. We wish them the best of luck against Naas CBS

SARAH STRIKES AGAIN

Congrats to Sarah Leahy ,who added to her burgeoning medal collection at the weekend in the Indoor National Athletics Championships. Representing Killarney Valley AC she finished second in the 200m final and 3rd in the 60m sprint final. The sprint final winning time was recorded as the fastest National time ever ,by Molly Scott, so Sarah can hold her head high after another memorable weekend.

AWARDS NIGHT

The date has been set for our first “in person” Awards Night since 2019 and it promises to be an exciting night. Having hosted virtual nights to great success in the last two years the Killarney Avenue Hotel will be the venue with tickets priced at a very reasonable 15 Euro. On the night we will be presenting the Senior Ladies with their Donal Curtin Cup medals as well as the various individual Awards for the year. In the coming weeks we will be unveiling the lucky recipients as we build up to the big night on Friday the 25th of March.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW

The draw, which took place last Tuesday February 22nd, threw up an interesting group for our Senior Men’s Team. Laune Rangers are one of the leading clubs in the County, holders of 12 Senior County Championships and 1 All Ireland Club Championship in 1996. A proud club they will be looking to get back to Kerry’s top table. The famed John Mitchels, holders of a record 5 in a row County Championship back in the 1960s, have been threatening to go on an  extended run in this Championship in recent years and powered by a number of St Brendans County Championship players they can be a formidable opponent. Dromid Pearses have made huge strides in recent years, winning 2 Kerry Junior titles and 1 Munster Junior title in 2011. Throw in numerous South Kerry Championships and you will find a seasoned championship outfit. This competition will commence two weeks after Kerry end their All Ireland Senior Championship campaign, hopefully at the final stage.

WEDDING BELLS

Congrats to Noel Moynihan, staunch Legion Junior Footballer, who met the match of his life recently when he married Mary Ellen Creedon from the Top of the Coom, Kilgarvan. We wish the happy couple the very best for the future.

EAST KERRY SUPERLEAGUE

The Senior Mens rounded off their Superleague campaign with a Round 3 clash at home to Spa. The visitors were seeking their first win in the competition and over the hour probably displayed a greater hunger. Quicker out of the traps we lead by 0-5 to 0-3 towards the end of the first half with  points coming from Thomas Moriarty (2), James O Donoghue, Jamie Alade (making his Senior team debut) and Denis Sheahan. A further point from James O Donoghue and two more from the visitors saw the half time score at 0-6 to 0-5.
It was in the third quarter that Spa gained a foothold in the game hitting four points without reply to open up a three point cushion that was never really threatened. This was despite the best efforts of Jamie O Sullivan and Jonathan Lyne who kicked three points between them. Despite the defeat the team have qualified for the East Kerry Superleague Final which will be played on Sunday March 13th against the winners of the other group.
