Club Notes 3rd September 2023

Our Senior Men advanced to the last four of the Intermediate Club Championship courtesy of a hard fought win over Beaufort. Played in blazing sunshine there was never much in the contest although we did make the stronger start leading 0-4 to 0-1 after 11 minutes. This was due to the accuracy of Finbarr Murphy but the Mid Kerry side tried to make home advantage count closing it to 0-7 to 0-6 by half time. The second half was an even tighter affair as the ante was upped and the sides were deadlocked at 10-10 with ten minutes to go. But Eoghan O Sullivan, Cian Gammell and substitute Jamie O Sullivan struck for three vital points as the rock solid defence held firm in the closing moments. Milltown Castlemaine provide the opposition in the semi final  and will no doubt prove to be obdurate opponents.
Team Brian Kelly, Podge O’Connor, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen (0-1), Cian Gammell(0-1), Darragh O Doherty, Darragh Fleming, Darragh Lyne, Padraig Lucey, Eoghan O Sullivan(0-2), Jonathan Lyne, Finbarr Murphy(0-4), Will Shine(0-1), Ryan O Grady(0-2), Peter McCarthy(0-1)
Subs Peter O Sullivan for Ryan O Grady,  Jamie O Sullivan(0-1) for Peter McCarthy, Jamie Alade for Finbarr Murphy, Shaun Keane for Padraig Lucey.

Our U11 boys were back in action and played some great football against a very sporting Fossa side on Thursday night. In all 26 boys played their part across  2 games  on a great evening for football . Huge thanks to John Keane and Oisin Fleming for refereeing both games and thanks to Donal O Donoghue for getting the pitches ready for this evening games.
Ronan O Brien, Samuel Scroope, James Murphy , Mark Looney and Jack Culloty finished their block with South Kerry Development Squads in a game vs North Kerry in Currans last Saturday morning. Thanks to the coaches and development officers for their work with the lads.

Our Legion U12 White team took on Glenflesk on Tuesday evening in a competitive match, which saw our opposition ahead for a good part of the game. With Glenflesk holding a lead, our players battled hard and put in a solid hours work that saw us briefly take the lead in the third quarter. Overall happy with the performance and effort level put in across the team but further work required. Thanks to everyone who assisted on the night- players, coaches, match officials, parents.

The U14 league continued when Beaufort provided the opposition for a Division 1 clash. A late afternoon deluge made for difficult conditions before throw in but both sides adapted well to serve up a rip roaring contest. The home side stormed out of the traps to take an early grip on the game. The wet sod made scores hard to come by but Legion fared better in front of goals to go in at the break in the ascendancy. The second half was an absorbing contest as Beaufort found their range and picked off points to eat into the deficit. The hosts defence were put to the pin of their collars and did well to stem the tide on several occasions. Legion raised a green flag at the other end to keep their noses in front. When the ref called for the ball, it was the home side who claimed the points on offer. Well done to both teams who served up an exciting and entertaining game in very challenging conditions. Thanks to Sean Courtney for officiating on the night.
Final score…Killarney Legion 2-06, Beaufort 0-10.

Our U16 Ladies played their opening East Kerry game of the campaign with another epic game with Glenflesk. The 17 who took part put on a heroic performance. Down 5 pts at half time and 9pts mid way through the half, they turned it around superbly to get back level. Unfortunately, though, Glenflesk kicked over a late free to win by the bare minimum. Down a number of regulars tonight, the girls did brilliantly and can be very proud of themselves. Final score Glenflesk 6-07 Legion 6-06.
Congratulations to Amber McIndoe, Kate Forde and Lucy O Connor who have all been selected on the Kerry FC u17 league of Ireland team. They will be sorely missed by their teammates and coaches and we thank them for their commitment and dedication to the green and white over the years. We look forward to watching their progress and hopefully see them back in action in Direen again.
Eight more Legion Ladies represented Kerry on Saturday in the Munster U15 PDP Blitz in Mallow. Well done to Molly Cronin, Kate O Toole, Eva O Shea, Kiera Moynihan, Laura Healy, Kate Fleming, Sophie Duke & Sophia Sharma.

Our Senior Ladies, sponsored by JM Reidys, had a busy week making the short trip to Fossa on Monday evening for the Junior Championship Round 2 game. In a very tight opening half scores were hard earned with both  defences dominant where Fossa led at the break 2-05 to 2-00. With a number of young Legion Ladies making their championship debut, it was always going to be a tough battle but they  took the game to Fossa early in the second half and always kept within touching distance but never quite got close enough. A couple of late goals put somewhat of a gloss on the scoreline in a game where both teams served up an entertaining and very competitive game.
Final score Fossa 5-07 Legion 3-02.
On Sunday morning they bounced back from the Fossa defeat with a good win over Currow.
