Club Notes 10th April 2022

LADIES UPDATE

Our Ladies team had mixed results this week.

The U12s welcomed Rathmore to Direen last Wednesday evening but found the Sliabh Luachra outfit an able opponent and despite hitting a hat trick of goals they still found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline.

The Under 14 Green team made it four wins from four on a blustery evening in Farranfore last Tuesday. Despite playing against the elements they went in ahead at halftime and consolidated that position in the second period and now sit top of the table with three rounds left to play. On Sunday they travelled to Moyvane for Round 5 and short a few regulars they found Moyvane a bridge too far in their bid to maintain their unbeaten run. They are however still in a strong position in the Division.

The Under 16s remain unbeaten in their Division following their latest win over Laune Rangers in Direen during the week. A strong first half laid the foundation for a 6-12 to 2-7 win over the Launesiders.

The Minor Ladies, buoyant from a great win over Listowel in Round 1, ran into a bang in form MKL Gaels outfit on Friday evening in a baltic Direen. Trailing by 12 at half time they soon cut the deficit to 5 but the Mid Kerry girls put on the afterburners and pushed on again. They travel to Na Gaeil this Friday looking to bounce back.

The Senior Ladies kicked off their Donal Curtin Division 2 campaign at home to Austin Stacks on Sunday. In a free flowing high scoring affair they just came up short in the end losing out on a 6-7 to 3-11 scoreline.

JUVENILE BOYS

The Under 13 White Team made it three wins from three when they got the better of John Mitchels in a wet and blustery Direen on Sunday evening. Again a feature of the win was all 21 players were involved. The Under 13 Green teams game against the same opposition is rescheduled to Wednesday April 20th.

Our Under 15 boys made the short trip to Spa last Wednesday evening in the latest round of the County League Division 1. Playing against the very wet and windy elements in the opening half they kept the Spa lead to a manageable 7 points. The game went score for score in the second half, maintaining Spas advantage until the last quarter  when a flurry of Legion scores, including an Oisin Fleming wonder strike , saw just the minimum between the sides. Try as they might they couldn’t muster up an equaliser. They travel to Gallerus in Round 3 on Wednesday April 13th.

SCHOOLS FOOTBALL

A great win by Gaelscoil Faithleann in the Cumann na mBunscoil final on Wednesday last in Farranfore in very challenging conditions. Big congrats to our Legion members  Callum Mac an Choilligh, James Ó Ceallacháin, Marco Mosca, Criostóir Brosnacháin, agus Daniel O Mainchin.

And well done also to St Brigids Presentation School who won the Kerry Senior Schools Shield Final recently. Amy Walshe, Ciara Doolan, Becci Fleming, Chloe Hue, Emma Horan, Aine Devlin, Andrea Murphy and Aisling Cahill were all involved.

KERRY LADIES

Big congratulations to the Kerry Ladies Senior team who grabbed the National League Division 2 title last Sunday in Croke Park defeating Armagh. And of course our own duo of Keri Ann Hanrahan and Elizabeth Mohan who are part of the winning panel.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES

The Club extends its sympathies to the family of Sheila O Donoghue( née O Meara) who passed away during the week. Sheila was a member of the O Meara family whose pub and grocery store in High Street  was an unofficial clubhouse for the Legion for many years. The family was very proud of its association with the Club. Sheila’s late brother Donal, served in various roles and officerships in the club while Padraig, though domiciled in Sligo, never forgot his roots, arranging many outings to and from Sligo for his adopted Club. Sheila’s twin sister Eileen only died last Christmas and with Sheila’s passing a generation of O Mearas has now sadly departed.

We also extend our sympathies to the Horgan family on the sad passing of Kathleen, Coolgrean Park . Two of Kathleen’s Grandchildren Lauren and Matthew play for the Club while sons Richard and Derry donned the Green and White in their time.

We’re still looking for our first League points after last weekend’s third round clash with Gneeveguilla played in Direen.
