SENIOR MEN

 
Six points from the boot of Thomas Moriarty wasn’t enough to save our Senior Men’s B team from defeat in Round 8 of the Credit Union County League. Kerins O Rahillys helped themselves into a 1-7 to 0-4 half time lead but a strong comeback in which Tadgh Doolan and Finn O Sullivan were also instrumental just fell short in the end, the Strand Road side winning on a 1-12 to 0-13 scoreline.

There is a local Derby in Division 1 of the County League when our Senior Teams unbeaten run will be tested to the very limit by the visit of Kilcummin. The game throws in at 7.30pm on Friday night(2nd June) in Direen.

SENIOR LADIES

Our Senior Ladies welcomed Ballymac to Direen on Monday for the latest round of the  Donal Curtin Cup . Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck but the Legion ladies did not panic and played their way into the game, raising their own green flag later in the half leaving the score at 1-02 at half time. The second half saw the breeze ease off but not the intensity as both teams really went for it in an enthralling encounter. Ballymac took a 2 point lead as the game entered its final minutes. Legion reduced the deficit to the bare minimum, but Ballymac came down the field to tack on another score to maintain the 2 point gap. A nail biting finish saw the Ballymac goalkeeper save well which helped secure the points for the visitors on the night. FT score Legion 1-07 Ballymac 1-09. No quarter was asked or given in what was a pulsating contest from start to finish.

JUVENILE BOYS UPDATE


The U8s / 9s boys played Castleisland Desmonds in Round 4 of our Go Games . We had 4 teams in action and 24 boys showing off all their skills in the beautiful sunshine in Direen. Thanks to all the coaches, parents & referees and especially Desmonds for travelling over in such big numbers.
The Under 11 Go Games continued on Thursday night in the home of Austin Stacks, Connolly Park. We played two very competitive games against the hosts, and there is a huge improvement in this group every week in the skills. Thanks to Colm and all the Austin Stacks crew where everything was fantastically organised. Big thanks also to trainers Eamon Maguire , Donal O Donoghue, and John Keane for their huge dedication to this group
Our U13 White team hosted John Mitchels on Friday evening in the last game of the group phase of Div 1A. Both teams had maximum points going into game and had already qualified for Div 1 semi finals. John Mitchels had much the better of the first half and worked some excellent scores to have a healthy lead at the break 4-6 to 1-2. We were a transformed side in the second half and brought the gap down to 2 points with a couple of minutes left. Mitchels worked some good scores in the last few minutes for a deserved win . Well done to our boys in qualifying from a really tough group for the Div 1 semi final, a game which they are greatly looking forward to.
Our other U13 team produced another fine team performance Sunday evening. The lads knew going out that a win would secure a semi-final place. The first half was closely contested with the scores level at the turn of play.  After some words of encouragement at the break and with the aid of a slight breeze, our boys took control of the game in the second half. Attacks were launched from the back line, and through some fine teamwork, we manufactured some well worked scores. All 21 lads contributed to what was a great squad performance, and we march on to the semi finals. Final score Killarmey Legion 3-16 John Mitchels 1-09
Our U15 Green team travelled out to a lovely Cordal pitch for their Division 9 final  against Austin Stacks. The host club had team announcements and the national anthem and made the 2 visiting teams feel welcome.
The game grew in excitement with the Rockies building up a first quarter lead with two goals which Legion chased in the second quarter. Legion did raise their own green flag but missed a number of great goal chances to trail by 5 points at half time. Legion started the second half well but suffered a setback when Stacks scored a third goal straight away after Legion got a second.Legion dug deep in an exciting final quarter in which they scored a goal and with the last attack of the game, got a 5th goal to tie matters at full time. However Legion played well in that first period and went in one point up. Stacks got a couple of quick scores to take a lead and then a goal out of nothing to put them in a strong position. Legion pressed hard and a foul outside the D resulted in a well taken free. Legion had a goal chance smothered and with the last play of the game had another goal chance which went agonisingly wide.A very exciting game and one which could have easily gone Legion’s way.

The game was expertly refereed by Evan Horan who has only recently taken up the whistle . His first County Final,  its definitely won’t be his last!!
The U17 boys welcomed the East Kerry League leaders Kenmare to Direen last Monday and started very slowly conceding 2-3 in the first 5 minutes. The home side started to grow into the game, but we spurned a number goal chances, and Kenmare punished our wastefulness by going in 6-7 to 0-7 at half time. A blistering start to the second half saw us score an unanswered 3-3 in the first five minutes of the second half to cut the deficit to six points. An epic second half saw some great long distance point taking and some heroic defending by the Kenmare defence ensured that they ran out 5 point winners in the end. Final score Kenmare Shamrocks 6-13 Killarney Legion 3-17.
The second team played Fossa on Sunday evening eventually going down in another high scoring encounter. Killarney Legion 5-8 Fossa 3-16.

LADIES UPDATE


The U16 Ladies made the trip to Miltown on Wednesday for their overdue County League Round 3 game. The game was played in perfect conditions on a superb playing surface. Both teams had registered wins in their first two outings, so the top spot was to play for before the League breaks for the State examinations. Both teams lined out without a number of regulars and the opening exchanges were tight before Legion opened the scoring after 5 mins. Playing with the breeze, Legion began to gain control of proceedings, although scores were at a premium . The second half began with Legion upping the intensity and working over a few well-earned scores. Another goal mid way through the half put a bit of daylight between the teams before MKL came back and registered some well-earned points of their own. Strong running and great teamwork were the backbone of this Legion performance winning on a final scoreline of MKL Gaels 0-05 Legion 2-10.
