KERRY PETROLEUM INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Our Senior Men’s team made a disappointing exit from the Intermediate Club championship when they were beaten by a ravenous An Ghaeltacht side at the semi final stage at a windswept and wet Austin Stack Park. The men from the West settled into the game much quicker and their talismanic figure Dara O Se shot them into a two point lead. James O Donoghue with a long range free with the aid of the elements put us on the scoreboard and this sparked a dominant period. Jamie O Sullivan levelled the scoring before Padraig Lucey won a throw up and slotted it straight between the posts. Jamie from a free made it 0-4 to 0-2 before Will Shine off the left from play arched one over. This was Legion’s most fluent period of play , something that they struggled to reproduce again. Jamie O Sullivan and Dara O Se exchanged frees with the half time score reading 0-6 to 0-3.
Jamie O Sullivan opened the second half scoring from a free, won by a hard working Denis Sheahan before Dara O Se struck again( He accounted for all but one of their scores). Jameso hit a beauty with his right to make it double scores but it was never comfortable as An Ghaeltacht continued to play with great fervour. They would soon start to dominate, scoring three on the bounce through O Se and Conn O Riagan. It was at this stage that Brian Kelly also pulled off a fine save to deny Eanna O Conchuir but there was no denying the pendulum had swung west. Luke O’Donoghue after a well worked move gave some extra breathing space at 0-9 to 0-7 with the game entering added time. But An Ghaeltacht were putting huge pressure on and it yielded two pointed frees for O Se as the game would go to extra time.
One could sense the momentum was with An Ghaeltacht and so it proved as they set about the task with gusto. A black card for substitute Conor Keane in the closing stages of normal time also meant a numerical advantage and with their tails up Dara O Se drove them home scoring all five of their points in extra time. Jamie O Sullivan and Finbarr Murphy with a free apiece kept the game going until the last minute but the Westerners defence was in mood for giving.
Team .. Brian Kelly, Rob Leen, Darragh O Doherty, Cathal Sheahan, Jonathan Lyne, Danny Sheahan, Peter O Sullivan, Padraig Lucey(0-1), Cian Gammell, Darragh Lyne, Jamie O Sullivan(0-5), Denis Sheahan, Ryan O Grady, James O Donoghue(0-2), Will Shine(0-1)…
