SPRING PARTY SUCCESS
It was a case of standing room only as a fine crowd attended our Spring Party in the Killarney Plaza on Friday night last. While many members of long standing were in attendance what really stood out was the amount of new families that have become involved in the club.So it was a good opportunity to chat and get to know many of the people who we meet regularly in Derreen as they attend training sessions and games.
Incorporated into the night were the awards to the various categories and it’s fair to say that the committee got it bang on with their selections. The recipients were –
Senior Ladies – Mairead O Donoghue
Young Player – Peter McCarthy
Junior Player – KJGriffin
Senior Player – Danny Sheahan
Club Person – Paul Trant
One of the many highlights of the night was the speech made by Paul Trant as he displayed a natural talent for public speaking mixing humour self deprecation modesty and some neatly delivered hop balls! It certainly was a hard act to follow – we might even give him the award again next year just to get him to speak again.
Congratulations to all the winners and as previously said each and every one thoroughly deserved.
We were delighted and privileged to once again have Joanne O Riordan attend one of our functions. She has become a regular at games as well and we greatly appreciate her support and look forward to her visiting Derreen in the coming season.
Kudos to Social Committee main man Brian Moriarty and his team on a top class job and an absolute dinger of a series of puzzles that very few managed to crack.
Many thanks also to the management and staff of the Plaza for their efforts on the night, the club has plans for further social events spaced over the coming months a good opportunity to wear the good gúna and the Sunday going to Mass outfit.
E.K.SUPERLEAGUE
Killarney Legion 1-14 Kilcummin 2-11
This second round game in Kilcummin saw the seniors show admirable resilience as they fought their way back from a 7 pt.deficit with 15 mins.to go to earn a share of the spoils. While both sides were guilty of some handling errors none the less they couldn’t be faulted for effort as the game was closely contested throughout.Indeed the home side seemed to have opened a winning margin but the Legion introduced Conor Keane and Ciarán Lyne and the effect was immediate with Keane brought down in the square with his first touch of possession. The same player cooly sent Brendan Kiely the wrong way and the comeback was on.Jamie O Sullivan was vital to the Legion’s cause as he kicked a total of 8pts.When all is said and done though it was young goalkeeper Conor McCarthy who really stood out with some tremendous saves and pinpoint long distance kickouts which directly resulted in scores. So a good test which saw a positive response from this very young Legion side with plenty more to come.
