Crokes edge local Derby

CO.LEAGUE
Save for the middle 10 minutes of the first half this local derby was very competitive played in mild windy conditions in front of a fine crowd.Crokes raced into an early 3 points lead but this was soon erased when Conor Keane applied a neat finish to the net which was quickly followed by a Billy Maguire point. It was at this stage that Crokes hit a purple patch scoring 7 points before Finbarr Murphy steadied the ship with a fine point.A good finish to the half saw the deficit down to a manageable 6 points. With wind assistance we started the second half with purpose scoring 3 fast points and by the 3/4 stage the game was in the melting pot with only 3 points between the sides.Try as they might we could not bridge the gap with Conor Keane thwarted by a fine save by the Crokes custodian and so the Crokes ran out 0-19 to 1-12 winners.Bearing in mind that as many as 10 players will be added to the panel come County Championship time it was a most competent performance by a depleted squad and with continued hard work by the panel and management on the training ground the 2 Championships in the Autumn can be looked forward to with anticipation. The next month sees some vital county league action with the immediate priority being a trip to Rathmore on the weekend of June 30th/July 1st.
E.K.JUNIOR LEAGUE
Killarney Legion 2-20 Scartaglin 0-4
Undoubtedly the Legion management would have preferred a sterner test but the juniors just had too much for a game Scartaglin side. With the advantage of two seniors players-Sean McCarthy and Alan Moriarty at midfield they had a solid backbone to the team.Allied to this the addition of a number of younger players -all showing up well – gave a nice balance to the side.Conor McCarthy and his namesake Stephen caught the eye and with the free ranging Micheál Devlin constantly driving at the Scart defence the scores came thick and fast. The same player is destined for the U.S.A.at the start of August as he takes up a scholarship in the prestigious Georgetown University.Such an opportunity would be hard to pass up but correspondingly a loss to the Legion.Still we wish him the very best of luck at this exciting time.
