U16 boys do it for Niall

U16 BOYS
Under 16 East Kerry Division 2 final: Killarney Legion 2-20 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-11.

The build up to the final was a difficult one after the news we received regarding teammate Niall McGillicuddy but the boys were determined to do him proud in this final.Niall had scored 1-08 in our semi-final win over Firies and his absence would be widely felt.We had met Kenmare in an earlier round of the league and although there wasn’t much between the sides in the first half we were well beaten in the finish by an excellent side. We were fortunate that a few of our more influential players who missed that game due to injury had recovered.Despite a light wind conditions on the night in Kenmare were otherwise ideal. We were against the breeze in the first half and both sides swapped some excellent scores in a free flowing game. Our defence has solidified as the league has progressed with the three older lads, Dion O’Neill, Cian O’Leary and Jack Corridan in particular using all their experience and strength to keep Kenmare’s attack in check.Jamie Alade and Daniel Carroll both did a great job in their man marking duties and are growing in confidence with each game.Although we felt we’d the upper hand in the first half we needed Ryan O’Grady to produce a calm side footed finish to the left of the Kenmare keeper to earn us a 3 point lead at the small whistle.
HT: Killarney Legion 1-08 Kenmare Shamrocks 0-08.
Eoghan O’Sullivan continues to impress in the centre of the field with his high fielding a joy to watch and his work rate was once again second to none and he was equally aided by his athletic midfield partner William Shine who is underage again next year. The lively Christian Casey got his reward for all his tireless running, scoring our second goal after a sweeping move found him unmarked at the far post.Aaron O’Sullivan and Kieran Pierce continue to impress on the wings while Darragh Fleming’s natural instinct of always being in the right place at the right time provided us with clever link up play between the backs and forwards.Hard work is a big part of our game and captain Jack McCarthy and Paudie O’Donoghue covered a lot of ground throughout.Man of the match,Ryan O’Grady ran riot in the second half bringing his personal tally to 1-12 on the night. We also have several under 14’s involved in the squad and it was also great to give them the opportunity to experience playing in a final hopefully plenty more to come. The Legion will be hoping to bring this form into the County league which is due to begin on June 20th. Mentors Paddy Osborne and Diarmuid O’Donoghue in the absence of fellow coach Daithi McGillicuddy were grateful to have the experience of Noel Kelleher, Mike Pierce & Timmy Joe Fleming on the line with them – well done lads.
A word of thanks also to the loyal bunch of supporters who travelled to encourage the lads.

Co.League
An Gaeltacht 3-17 Killarney Legion 2-13
A high scoring encounter but ultimately no joy for the seniors away to An Gaeltacht. They were in contention until a rather harsh red card three minutes into the second half effectively put paid to their chances. They battled on but An Gaeltacht reaped the benefit of the extra man as the Legion defence tired and gradually the home side pulled away.Conor Keane tried manfully to carry the scoring threat and he got both goals – the second a well struck penalty for which he himself was brought down.Cian Gammell,Chris Davies and once again Jonathan Lyne gave all they could but couldn’t stem the Gaeltacht tide.
U16 GIRLS
Killarney Legion 4-11 Bayllmacelligott 1-8
Despite playing against the wind in the first half a determined performance saw the girls lead 1-5 to 0-8 at the break showing an economy of waste by converting most of their opportunities.Ballymac put it back into the melting pot with a converted penalty on the resumption but it served to see the Legion girls respond strongly and their all action play saw them add 3-6 to their tally to give them the win.A sign of the teams all round balance was the fact that 8 different players got on the scoresheet.A close knit group and it shows in their team work.
